Having moved to Whittlesey in 2018 it soon became clear to me that the Fenland Folk of Whittlesey and its surrounding villages were fiercely proud of their heritage in history alongside their present day environment. I became an avid campaigner and supporter of the Fenland Flag campaign locally and, after visiting the Whittlesey Museum a few times and being very impressed with what I saw, I decided to join the team of volunteers. The volunteers are a friendly group, some of whom are Whittlesey born and bred and others who, like myself, have moved to the area more recently and are keen to be more involved in the community. I have no experience in the workings of a museum! But, on volunteer days, there is always something to be done and it gives a great sense of achievement to be able to help in the maintenance of the museum collections and the smooth running of the building. I also steward once a month on a Saturday and enjoy meeting and greeting the museum visitors (who often teach me something new). I am still learning so much about Whittlesey and the surrounding area as well as gaining new skills and insights into the working of a museum. I would highly recommend volunteering at the museum, whatever your background, interest or areas of expertise. Come and join us. The more the merrier!
