Education

It is important to us that we engage with the younger generations, linking the history taught in school with the history of their environment.

School and Group Visits

Whittlesey Museum welcomes pre-booked school visits and works with teachers to create sessions tailored to curriculum needs, with advance notice. School visits can be arranged outside normal museum opening hours and are usually charged at £1 per pupil, with no charge for accompanying adults. To enquire about availability or make a booking, please visit our ‘contact us’.

Recent themes delivered for schools include:

  • The Romans
  • World War Two: The Home Front
  • World War Two: Whittlesey Emergency Plan
  • Treasure
  • How to run a museum
  • Money
  • Drainage of the Fens

Themes can be supplemented by props, costumes and real objects from the museum’s collection.

Memory Boxes

To bring the museum to the school, we offer educational memory boxes which contain a selection of real and replica items and printed material related to the selected topic. The boxes are intended for supervised handling within schools and groups to stimulate discussions and classwork.

Memory boxes available include:

  • Roman Life
  • Seaside Holidays
  • The 1950s
  • Toys Through the Ages
  • Victorian Homes
  • Victorian Schools
  • Victorian Workhouse
  • Whittlesey in WW2
  • Memory Box Policy

Memory Boxes are available to hire upon agreement and payment of £10 per box. It is required to complete a hire agreement form which must be signed upon collection and upon return of the box in its original condition and with all its parts. To hire a box, please get in contact via the ‘contact us’ page.

Due to boxes being delivered by our volunteers, boxes are currently only available to schools and groups in Whittlesey and in the immediate area.
